HI! I’M ANNE Mcginty,

the host of how i built my small business.

I’m passionate about spreading positivity and inspiring people to build their lives around what is most meaningful to them.

My mission is to simplify business know-how and personal finance lessons through the art of storytelling. In my podcast, you’ll hear fascinating stories and practical advice from entrepreneurs from diverse niches and perspectives.

I plan my line-up the same way I would curate a photography portfolio — each episode is like an individual image and holds its own meaning, value, and story and yet together as a group, they tell a cohesive narrative and teach collectively. I believe that knowledge that can help others is meant to be shared.

I’m doing this for aspiring and existing entrepreneurs, anyone who is curious about the secrets and insights of business founders, and listeners interested in the incredible steps of how people go from the spark of an idea to full blown success.

No ego. Just Insight.

"TEN YEARS FROM NOW, MAKE SURE YOU CAN SAY THAT

YOU CHOSE YOUR LIFE, YOU DIDN'T SETTLE FOR IT." -UNKNOWN

In my show 'How I Built My Small Business,' I interview entrepreneurs who can speak about a specific topic in which they are an expert and from whom I and listeners can learn fascinating insights.

I love the other business shows and the incredible knowledge that high caliber, super successful CEOs have to share. But I also feel like focusing only on the $100m+ business leaders leaves a huge gap.

What about the family-owned businesses that is bringing in $10m/ year with a 25% net profit?

Or, the person who started a relatively low-skill business concept that operates for 6 months a year, makes millions, and they spend time with their family for the other 6 months?

How about a self-taught skill that turned into a $2m business and allowed the person to work part-time and give up their full-time job?

Or, the lifestyle-centric outward bound business that operates only three months a year and makes the owner enough to live their dream lifestyle the rest of the year?

How cool are these stories! These people are just as incredible as the unicorns, and their advice and stories may be more relatable to most.

My goal is to highlight some of the more 'Main Street' entrepreneurs and to make my guests feel comfortable enough to be vulnerable and authentic while offering invaluable insight to inspire and pave the way for the next generation of entrepreneurial leaders.

who is anne mcginty?

HI! I’M SO HAPPY YOU’RE HERE!

I’m Anne, but some friends call me “Annie.”

I love seeing people succeed and will forever be cheering you on.

Happy people are nice people, and the world could surely benefit from having more positivity.

SO, WHO IS ANNE?

I am a first-generation Filipina-American and at thirty-nine, I reached a point where my passive income exceeded my family’s expenses. A major step in getting there was entrepreneurship, which is one of the reasons I decided to start a podcast: to share the advice and insight small businesses owners have for building sustainable businesses. The other big step was investing.

I learned about savvy investing from my parents, who immigrated to America in the early 1970s with just $200 each and without any external assistance. Witnessing their incredible journey, I watched as they amassed a portfolio of a dozen properties, funded their four children’s educations, and splurged on international family trips for a party of six. My parents worked tirelessly, sometimes through the night, without feeling they had the luxury of choosing between money and time.

I remember the roller coaster ride after college, transitioning out of an education, backpacking for a year, selling toothpaste, trying to balance building up financial stability while dealing with soul-searching questions, and living paycheck-to-paycheck in San Francisco. In my twenties, I ventured into a series of small businesses, including a greeting card venture, an importing business fraught with defective products, handmade ice pops that had an unexpected sticking issue, and a professional Christmas light installation company with no prior experience. One was a great side-gig, one was a complete disaster, and two of my businesses had successful financial exits and garnered recognition in renowned publications such as Sunset Magazine, San Francisco Chronicle Magazine, Refinery29, 7x7 magazine, and more.

I hope you enjoy the show! I welcome your feedback, ideas, and questions, so please get in touch.

  • No. It would take a lot of getting to know you and the specifics of your life, expenses, spending habits, and goals for me to give specific advice. Additionally, in the USA, giving financial advice requires proper licensing, which I don’t have.
